REGION: Gatineau West
DESCRIP- TION | Step down into the layout room and you are presented with an all-encompassing view of Rio Grande Southern (RGS) steam engines struggling to move freight up the high line from Ophir towards the summit. The sound of the lead engine reverberates off the mountain walls, nearly drowning out the helper on the tail end. One of the largest layouts in the region, the model railway faithfully recreates 66 miles of this Colorado narrow gauge line, from Ridgway and the interchange with the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad to Rico, halfway to the RGSs eventual end point. The layout includes Placerville, Vanadium and its mining complex, Vance Junction and the branch line to Pandora and Telluride, Lizard Head and its snow shed covered wye, Trout Lake, Ophir, and finally Rico. 500 feet of tortuous travel to arrive across the aisle! The RGS features finely detailed locomotives, rolling stock and structures, along with towering mountain scenery that combine to provide a spectacular expression of mountain railroading. |
