Wimplethorpe

REGION: Ottawa East

DESCRIP-
TION
The layout’s objective is to capture the scene between the tunnel and the station at Welwyn North in Hertfordshire in England where the owner loco-spotted as a boy. So the layout needed to have a double main line through-station and this in turn implied a circular track so that express trains could race past the viewer. After all, the trains on this line were headed by such well known engines as Flying Scotsman and Mallard. The track is a single line, but the opposite sides of the circle are drawn together to give the appearance of double track. The return loops are in tunnel so much of the scenery must be removable.
Semi-automatic operation is handled by train detectors and relays which also drive signals. The whole layout has the appearance of a diorama and is viewed at sitting height allowing visitors to obtain a “track-side” perspective.
